Students' thoughts on study with Shuster:
1.  "As a teacher of dance at a liberal arts college  for over thirty years, I have a high regard for the value of teaching the arts to students of all levels.  I have studied, in several different occasions over the years, drawing and painting with Wendy Shuster.  She is one of the best teachers it has been my privilege to study with.  Great teachers, in my opinion, work equally well with professional-level students and with newcomers to the field.  They treat their students with respect and consideration, while demanding of them hard work and discipline.  They are able to blend professional expectations with their  passion for the the arts in a unique and exciting way.  They know when to step in, when to leave the student alone, and what kind of mix of criticism and support will be appropriate with each student.  Wendy is one of those teachers.  I recommend her highly to teach drawing and painting in any setting--teenagers, adults, beginners, intermediate or advanced level.  She is, without a doubt, a master teacher."

malgrund: weiss lackierte plexiglasscheibe
groesse: 100 cm x 76 cm

verduennung: destilliertes wasser
pistole: rotring airbrush - duese 0,2

vorbereitung der plexiglasscheibe:
anschleifen der zu lackierenden oberflaeche
mit 800er - 1000er schleifpapier (nass).

auftrag der weissen lackschicht direkt auf die geschliffene plexiglasscheibe.
nach dem trocknen anschleifen der lackflaeche mit 12ooer schleifpapier (nass).
reinigen der geschliffenen oberflaeche mit silikonentferner.

als vorlage diente ein zweiseitiges farbposter aus einer motorradzeitschrift. dieses wurde fotografiert (dia) und mit einem diaprojektor auf die plexiglasscheibe geworfen. nach genauem ausrichten wurden alle konturen der einzelnen motorradteile mit einem buntstift genau nachgezeichnet.

das komplette nachzeichnen muss in einem arbeitsgang geschehen, da ein erneutes ausrichten des projektors zur plexiglasscheibe, zu einem spaeteren zeitpunkt kaum mehr 100%ig moeglich ist.

die ausarbeitung wurde freihand mit nur einer farbe realisiert. die glanzlichter entstanden mit hilfe eines radierers. es wurden immer einzelne bereiche komplett ausgearbeitet.

dieses bild ist aus reiner lust zum malen entstanden. der hintergedanke war die herausforderung nur mit schwarzer farbe fotorealistisch zu malen.

the idea for this painting came to mind because i like to listen to music while i work. i listen to a wide variety, but while painting, i really like vocal jazz music like frank sinatra, peggy lee and dean martin. i wanted to capture the spirit of this kind of music, with the chrome microphone, the black dress and long dark hair.

much of my work is now produced on computer which i have found offers flexibility that airbrushed paintings by there nature cannot and in today´s working world, art directors want lots of changes but i am still producing images in paint for my own amusement. i attach a painting i did quite a few years ago. i chose it because it has a narrative and a tension between the characters which is not always possible to show in book covers. it was for the book by philip k. dick and the title is -flow my tears the policeman said-.

originally painted for white wolf´s bloodlines III product, i modified the primary character and eliminated two background characters in order to make this image of a modern urban gothic heroine. i use 95% or more corel painter 9.5 for my digital work, on a mac dual 2.3 ghz power pc g5, with an intuos III 9 x 12 wacom tablet and stylus. while i always enjoy painting a beautiful woman, i especially enjoyed creating the dappled light effect for this.

using an efbe model "a" airbrush
the medium is schmincke, aerocolor

this image was created to be used as a collectable promotional poster for a special airshow that was to occur in conjunction with the worlds fair in vancouver bc canada. the airshow brought together over 100 surviving dc - 3 aircraft from all over the world. this was the aircraft the first made commercial air travel possible. there are many still in operation worldwide today. in the end, the client ran out of money and the art was never printed.

the art director, who commissioned this painting is an enthusiastic amateur pilot. although the art is stylized, he insisted that all aspects of the image were to be technically accurate. this included all the rivets. each had to appear to be countersunk in the sheet metal.

the model is jessamyne from australia, with photo reference taken by dale jordan. jewelry is actual jewelry made by phyll smith at eyescreamjewelry.com. the inspiration comes from the character in the fleetwood mac song rhiannon. the scene and background were made to have a feel of whitby abbey, which was also inspiration for bram stoker´s novel dracula. the wolf is there to give you the suggestion that she is not as innocent as she looks. i used layers of transparent paint built up from light to dark and used liquid frisket to add texture, movement, and brushstroke to the background. details and jewelry were painted with conventional brush. all things combined make a very mysterious painting.
